4 large onions
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 bay leaves
Dash pepper
5 cups meat stock
4 slices French bread,thick and toasted

Directions:
Directions:
In large saucepan melt butter. Over low heat add the onions and sprinkle with salt. Stir and cook until tender,pan covered. Remove cover,raise heat slightly and sauté,stirring frequently until onions turn a Carmel color,about one hour,careful not to burn.add the stock and bay leaves,bring to boil,reduce heat,cover and cook for 30 minutes.Serve with sprinkled cheese and toast on top.
