1/2 cup sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/3 cup (heaping) shortening and butter mixed
2 cups liquid scalded (1 cup milk and 1 cup water)
1/2 teaspoon cardamon
4 3/4 cups flour
pinch of saffron or turmeric for color
2 cakes yeast in 1/3 cup warm water with 1/4 teaspoon sugar
egg yolk and teaspoon of water mixed to brush on top
2 egg yolks and 1 whole beaten egg

Directions:
Directions:
Put sugar, salt, shortening and butter in a large bowl. Add hot liquid. Add saffron or turmeric for color. Then add beaten eggs. Beat mixture slightly. Add cardamon and flour. Knead well until it pulls from the side of the bowl for 10 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle very lightly with flour. Raise until double. Punch down. Raise again. Divide for loaves. Let sit for 5 minutes. Put in greased loaf pans. Raise. Brush with egg yolk and water mix. Bake at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes. Take out of pan and bake on grate for 10 minutes. Makes two or three loaves.
