2 cups Sugar
1 cup Butter or Oleo
4 Eggs
1 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. grated Orange rind
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 1/4 cup Buttermilk
3 cups Flour
1 sm. pkg. Dates chopped
1 cup Pecans chopped
Glazed
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Orange juice
2 tsp.grated Orange rind

Directions:

Mix sugar, butter, eggs, salt and orange rind together, Mix well. Put baking soda and buttermilk together and stir well, then add the above mlxture alternately, with flour. Mix well and add date and pecans. Stir well and pour into well greased and waxpaper on bottom for Angel food cake pan. Bake 1 1/2 to 2 hours in 300º oven. Place a pan of water under cake while baking. Make the glaze while the cake is baking. Before removing the cake from the pan pour the glaze over the cake.
When poured over cake let it stand until it is soaked into cake. Turn the cake out on to wax paper then turn back top side.

Vada would make this at Christmas time. Knox and Knox Jr. love it. You only need a small piece, it is very rich in flavor.
