1 lg. pkg. of cut up dates 1 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar 1 egg
1 3/4 c. flour 1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 c. nuts

BROILER ICING:
3/4 c. brown sugar 4 tbsp. cream
6 tbsp. melted butter 1 c. coconut
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Pour boiling water over dates and baking soda and let stand. Mix together shortening, sugar, and egg, then add date mixture. Add flour, salt, vanilla, and nuts. Bake cake about 35 min. at 350º.
ICING: Bring first three icing ingredients to a boil, then add coconut and nuts. Spread on baked cake. Put under, not too hot a broiler to brown. Watch continually as it only takes a few minutes. Date cake keeps well and is very nice to freeze.
