1 1/2 pints sour cream (can use less)
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. mustard seed
2 tbsp. grated coconut
1 green chili (opt)
can use a combination of the following chopped vegetables: green pepper and 1 tomato or cucumber with tomato or diced cooked potatoes and grated carrot
dash turmeric
salt to taste

Directions:
Combine the sour cream, vegetables, coconut, chili and salt. Heat the butter in a heavy skillet until bubbling (careful not to burn) and then add the mustard seeds and dash of turmeric. Cook until mustard seeds pop open (to release the oil). Remove to cool. Add to the sour cream mixture/vegetable mixture. Cool before serving.

This is a recipe from Baloo, (Balasubrimanium) our Indian friend who studied with Raul at the University of Chicago and baby-sat my children Raul and Elizabeth. He would come over to our apartment to cook his Indian meals. Some of his recipes were so hot with green chilies that I would get sick later, but never, ever regretted eating his exotic dishes. This particular salad is very cool and refreshing - even though it may sound strange. The butter, turmeric and mustard seeds are essential to this recipe.
Over the years I have lost contact with Baloo, but he is never forgotten.
