3/4 cup butter or margarine (Crisco makes them chewy)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. soda
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger (fresh is really good)
1/4 tsp. cloves

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and molasses and beat well.

Add 2 flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, ginger and cloves.

Chill 1 hour. Form 1" balls, roll in sugar.

Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for 8 to 10 minutes or until top is light brown. Cool on cookie sheet – then rack.

These are from my sister-in-law Ellen from a Abel Family Reunion back in 1997. They are EXCELLENT and chewy a family favorite.
