1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 c. sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. thick, cold applesauce
3/4 c. raisins or chopped dates
1/2 c. broken walnut meats (optional)

Preheat oven to 350º. Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs. Add flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg. Mix..add cold applesauce. Beat. Add raisins (or dates). Add walnuts, if desired. Mix..pour into greased and floured loaf pan 8x4 1 2/3 inches. Bake at 350º for 1 hour. Top will split a little. Done when top springs back.

This recipe also comes from the Palenville Ladie's Auxilary Cook Book, which the girls had done as a fund raiser..early 70's, I think, can't find a date in the book!
