Grandpa Les Bradway's English Toffee Recipe

2 cups granulated sugar
1 lb butter
4 Tbsp white Karo syrup
1/2 cup of water
1 1/2 cup of chopped nuts ( Grandpa always used Black Walnuts)
4 regular sized plain Hershey milk chocolate bars
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Combine the sugar,butter,Karo syrup and water into a 6 quart heavy sauce pan
Heat the mixture to 305 degrees,stirring constantly (do not scrape the sides of the sauce pan.)
Remove from the heat and add the nuts, and 1 tsp of vanilla.
Spread thinly on to a large cookie sheet lightly buttered.
Place milk chocolate bars on the top (one bar at a time) spreading evenly as chocolate melts.

My Grandfather made this every year and sent it at Christmas. I hated black walnuts but grew to love them after eating this toffee for years. My mother told me that when she was little he made this treat every Christmas eve.
