1 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
4 T. molasses
2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
1 egg
1 t. cinnamon
1 t. ginger
1 t. vanilla
1/2 t. ground cloves
2 3/4 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening. Add molasses, egg and vanilla, beating well. Add flour and spices and beat until well blended. Form into walnut sized balls, and roll in sugar. Do not press them down, they make their own shape. Bake at 350º on a greased cookie sheet for 10 minutes or until light brown.

We grew up on these cookies.
***I have to add 3 cups of flour and then chill the dough a half an hour before baking. My sister Mary says it's because of the changes in flour and shortening to what we use today.
