Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly spray or oil bottom and sides of a 9x13 in baking dish.

Stir 2 cups flour with icing sugar in a bowl until blended. Using a pastry blender (or knives or fingertips), cut in butter until coarse crumbs form. Press over bottom of prepared dish. Bake in center of oven until light golden around edges, 25 to 30 min.

Stir 1/2 cup flour with baking powder and salt in a small bowl. In a large bowl, whisk eggs with vanilla. Whisk in brown sugar. Gradually stir in flour mixture just until combined. Stir in nuts, coconut, chocolate chips and cherries. Pour over hot baked crust and spread evenly. Bake in center of oven until filling is set and edges are golden, 25 to 30 min. Cool on a rack. It is easier to slice after cooling then putting in the fridge for about 3 hours.
