"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

Yolanda, Rita, Elaine and I (Sue Kern) were great friends in high school. I am still working on Rita to get her to come back home for a reunion, but we are happy to say that Yolanda has promised to attend this year. Welcome home, Yolanda.

Memories: A Perk & Hazel Ann Story:

One day Hazel Ann met me in the hall at school and said, “I don’t like what they’re having for lunch today. Let’s ask Mr. Dotson if we can go to Delo’s and get foot long hot dogs.” So we went to the office and Mr. Dotson said, “ABSOLUTELY NOT.” Well, we had our pocketbooks with us and we just walked out the front door. Hazel Ann’s sister Louellen was the librarian at CHS and Hazel Ann had her sister’s car keys for some strange reason. We got in the car and drove to Delo’s and picked up our hot dogs. We decided to go up the hill to school on the town side and Hazel Ann was going too fast to properly turn that curve so we went into the ditch with two wheels in it and two out. Hot dogs were all over us but Hazel Ann just kept going until we reached the top of the hill. There the car stuck and would go no further. Hazel Ann asked me what we could do and I told her that I was going back to class, so that’s what we did, smelling like Delo’s hot dogs. When we got to the school, we used the phone to call Barney Addington. He towed the car back up the hill and parked it in the same place where Louellen had parked it. Louellen had to work late that day so Hazel Ann and I tried to wipe some of the dirt off with our gym clothes. I spent the night with her and we “volunteered” to wash the car for her. We thought we were home free until a few days later, Hazel Ann had a phone call from Barney Addington wanting his $10 towing charge. She found me and said, “We’ve got a problem.” Barney told her that she had until Friday to give him his money or he was going to report us to Mr. Dotson. This was Monday and the only money we had was lunch money—we didn’t eat lunch all that week! We found a coffee can and started “bumming” from EVERYBODY. By Thursday we had collected $10.04 in change, so we stole Louellen’s car again and went to Barney Addington’s. We gave him the can with all the change and he counted it. As we were leaving he said that we had change coming. Hazel said, “Nah, you just keep it.” I don’t know if Louellen ever knew this, but I’m sure Mr. Dotson did. He never missed anything.
