1 C soft shorting, 2 to 3 t cinnamon, 1 1/2 t vanilla, 1/2 C finely chopped nuts, 1/2 C finely cut dates, 2 eggs, 1/2 C sugar, 2 3/4 C sifted self-rising flour, 1/4 t soda and 1/2 C brown sugar (packed).

Mix thoroughly shorting, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients and stir in. Add nuts and dates.Mix with hands. Mold into a smooth roll about 2 1/2" in diameter. Wrap in waxed paper, chill until firm( several hours or over night) Heat oven to 400º With thin sharp knife, slice dough about 1/8" thick. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 6 to 8 min. makes about 6 doz.
