6 quarts thinly sliced cucumbers, 1/2 cup salt, 6 medium onions, sliced, 2 - 3 dozen ice cubes, 2 cups water, 1 quart vinegar, 4 cups sugar, 2 tbsp celery seed, 2 tbsp mustard seed, 2 tsp turmeric

Layer cucumbers, salt, and onions in a large container. Cover with ice cubes. Let sit 3 hours. Drain. Combine remaining ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Boil 3 minutes. Add cucumbers and onions. Bring to just below boiling. Pour into hot, sterilized jars; seal and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.
