3 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
1 pound pitted dates
1 tablespoon butter
2 cups chopped pecans
1/2 teaspoon vanilla (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Mix milk, sugar, and butter together and bring to a good boil until soft ball stage. Add dates and cook until dates are dissolved. Remove from stove and add pecans. (I usually cook pecans a few minutes before removing from stove) Stir all the time from the very beginning! Remove from pan onto a wet cloth when it begins to get stiff. Roll into a log. Let set a few days. Slice as needed.
