1 cup flour
1 cup brown sugar
2 1/2 cups oatmeal
1 cup shortening
1 1/2 pound of dates

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Sift flour and salt together. Add sugar and oats. Cut in shortening making a crumbly mass. Press half the mixture in a 9 X 13 pan. Add filling. Press remainder of dry mixture on top. Bake 45 minutes.

Filling
Cook dates with a little water until a soft paste.

To make with fruit
! large can of pineapple or cherries, with 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tbsp. cornstarch. Cook slowly until thick and clear. Add 1 tsp. lemon juice. Assembles as above and bake.
