8 qts. huge cucumbers
2 cups coarse salt
4 qts. boiling water
2 tbsp.alum
2 gallons hot water
3 qts. vinegar
14 cups sugar
14 cups celery seed
1/2 cup mixed pickling spice

Directions:
Directions:
Wash & cut cucumbers in quarters. Remove seeds. Do not peel.. I cut in chunks. Place in stone crock or large vessel. Make a brine of salt & hot water. Pour over cucumbers. Let stand 3 days.
Drain in collander & reserve liquid. Put cucumbers back in crock, bring liquid back to boil & again pour over cucumbers. Let set 3 more days. Drain & discard liquid. Rinse cucumbers well in cold water. Put cucumbers back in crock, dissolve alum in 4 qts. boiling water. Pour over cucumbers & let stand 6 hours. Drain cucumbers, discard liquid & rinse well.
Make a syrup of vinegar, sugar & spices. Pour over cucumbers. Let stand 1 day. The next 2 days, drain syrup, drain & reserve syrup. Boil & cover cucumbers each day.
On the last day, drain & reserve syrup, bring syrup to boil, pack cucumbers in clean sterilized jars & cover with hot syrup.
