Directions:
CAKE: Cream shortening, sugar and eggs; add food coloring and cocoa. Alternately add flour with buttermilk, salt and vanilla; beat until smooth. In a cup, mix vinegar and soda; fold into mixture. Pour into prepared 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350º for approx 30 minutes.
FROSTING: Combine flour and milk in sauce pan; cook over medium heat until thick. Cool in refrigerator. Add oleo and sugar to flour mixture and beat until fluffy; spread on cooled cake. (Note: this makes a lot of frosting -- enough for a 2-layer cake.)

Karen is an OK friend of Gordon & Sue Kay. She grew up in Norman, OK and the foods they eat are more "southern" than we grew up knowing.
