Meringue Crust:
2 egg whites
1/8 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 C sugar
1/2 C chopped nuts (optional)
1/2 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt


Filling:
3/4 C chocolate chips
1/4 C hot water
1 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt
1/2 pint whipping cream

Directions:
Directions:
Crust:
Place egg whites in bowl with salt, cream of tartar and vanilla. Beat until stiff. Add sugar gradually, beating until very stiff and sugar is dissolved. Should stand up in stiff peaks.

Spread into a well greased 9" pie pan.
Shape the crust to build up the sides.
Sprinkle chopped nuts on bottom (optional). Bake in 250° oven for 1 hour, turn off heat and keep in oven 1 more hour. (Grandma wrote - " I leave in gas oven all nite ")

Filling:
Melt chocolate chips over simmering water, in a double broiler; when melted add hot water, vanilla and salt. Stir until completely smooth. Cool. Stir into cream whipped stiff. Pour into shell. Refrigerate 4 hours or over nite.
