Wrap each cocktail wiener with about 1/3 slice of bacon and skewer with a toothpick. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and lay out the wrapped smokies on it. Baste lightly with maple syrup (optionally mixed with drop or two of liquid smoke). Sprinkle the smokies with brown sugar and bake at 325 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes. Bake until the bacon is done.
Transfer the smokies to a slow cooker adding a little more brown sugar to each layer and cook on low. It is ready to eat in about an hour and will hold with the slow cooker for several hours.
