3 c. sweet potatoes, mashed (canned, well drained potatoes will work)
1 c. sugar
2 eggs (beaten)
1 t. vanilla
1/2 c. butter or margarine
Topping:
1 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. flour
1 c. pecans or walnuts (chopped)
1/3 c. butter or margarine (softened but not melted)

Directions:
Directions:
Scrub and boil sweet potatoes. Drain and cool. Remove skins and mash. (This step is not necessary if you are using canned sweet potatoes).
Mix the first 5 ingredients thoroughly and pour into a buttered casserole dish.
Mix the toppings to crumb consistency. Add nuts and mix well. Sprinkle on top of sweet potatoes and bake at 350º for 30 minutes

In her recipe Rheta writes that the following variations are very good.
Add 1/2 t. rind and 1 T. lemon juice
1/2 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. ginger
1/4 t. ground cloves
1/4 t. salt (may omit) to sweet potato mixture
Add 1 c. coconut or 1 c. white raisins to topping mixture
