A very simple, basic sangria recipe. While this sangria is delicious as is, this recipe intentionally leaves ample room for improvisation and additions, and should therefore be used as a springboard to create your own unique sangria recipes. The unaltered basic sangria recipe, however would meet with the approval of strict sangrĂa traditionalists. |

Notes: The first day Andrew and I were in Madrid, Kathleen, Andrew, and I too a long stroll through the Old Medieval portion of the city. We had subway maps and little else. We walked along one of the main streets past the beautiful, ancient buildings and ended up at a large Plaza that was ringed with incredible and colorful old buildings. The center of the Plaza had the most extraordinary gardens I think that I had ever seen. Each planting bed was ringed with low growing, brightly colored flowers which created incredible designs and each of these flower beds, may 20 foot square, combined to create a huge patchwork quilt. In the center of the plaza was the requisite huge statue and there were rows of statues around the outer edges. Across the plaza was an incredible building which we later learned was the Royal Palace. Also ringing the Plaza were many open air cafes. Kathleen and I shared a pitcher of Sangria, much like this at one of the tented cafes!
