2/3 cup sugar
dash of salt
2 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon flour
2 1/2 cups whole milk or half and half or heavy cream or a combination of them
2 egg yolks beaten
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 tablespoon butter

Directions:
Directions:
Mix the first 4 ingredients in a saucepan:
Stir the milk or cream in gradually.
Cook over moderate heat stirring almost constantly until mixture thickens and boils. Boil one minute and remove from heat.
Stir in the egg yolks.
Return to heat and boil one minute stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in the butter and the vanilla .
