"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

Directions:
Put dates in pot, cook for 5 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in nuts. Let mixture cool. Cream together butter and sugars. Add egg and blend. Sift dry ingredients together. Add to creamed mixture, blend well (small amount of flour little at a time). Chill dough 1 hour. Divide dough in half. Roll out oblong shape to 1/4 inch thick. Spread 1/2 date nut mixture over dough (may need to add couple drops water to date mixture in order to spread). Roll up dough, wrap in wax paper, then aluminum foil and chill for 24 hours. Slice 1/4 inch slices and bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Depending on your oven they may be done in 8 minutes. Watch carefully as they will burn easily.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Our mother, Alice Markland, loved her family, friends and church. She was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for our family. She and our father managed to raise 4 girls, along with working in the garden, canning fruits and vegetables. She sewed and made our clothes when we were younger. With 4 girls in the family, we always had our friends over to spend the night or just to eat supper. Mother always found enough food to go around and fed us great meals. She enjoyed sharing her faith with her Sunday School class and WMU. Her love is still there for us all to remember along with these recipes. By daughters.
