12 eggs, separated
12T sugar (heaping tablespoons)
6 T flour
3T cocoa
Frosting:
8 ounces ground roasted hazelnuts plus 8 ounces for topping
1/2 lb sweet butter
1/2 t vanilla
8 oz chocolate chips - melted
1/4 cup milk
3 - 4 cups powdered sugar

Cake:
Make a meringue by beating all of the egg whites until stiff. Slowly add sugar. Keep beating, then add egg yolks slowly. Beat well.
Fold slowly into sifted flour and cocoa. Put in 2 round pans lined with parchment paper. Bake
at 250 degrees for 2 hours. Remove from oven and cool. When cooled invert and slice each layer in half, making a total of 4 layers.

Frosting:
Toast and skin 1 pound of hazelnuts. Chop finely.

Melt chocolate chips slowly on stove. Add milk, butter, vanilla and whisk. Let cool for a few minutes. In a bowl, cream together 3 cups sugar, 1 cup nuts and choc. mixture. If too thin, add more sugar. If too thick, add milk.

Cool slightly.

Frost, then add a layer of nuts in between each layer. Frost the top, add nuts and chill.

This was Helmut's favorite thing to eat in the world! For Helmut's birthday, Grandma always shipped him a torte.
