Basic Cookie Recipe: 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup shortening 2 eggs, 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp soda.

Cream sugars, shortening and eggs. Add salt and soda to flour and blend. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture and mix well. Divide dough into three portions. For Chocolate Crinkles:melt 1/3 cup chocolate bits and add to one portion of dough. Shape into 1 inch balls and roll in 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. Place on greased baking sheet. For Cherry Almond Drops: add 1/2 cup of cut up drained maraschino cherries, 1/2 cup coconut, flake or shredded, and 1/4 tsp almond extract to one portion of dough. Shape into 1 inch balls and place on greased cookie sheet. For Date Nut Chews: add 1/2 cup cut up dates and 1/2 cup of chopped nuts to one portion of dough. Shape into 1 inch balls and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes.
