5 cups whole milk
1/2 cup butter (cut up)
1/2 cup margarine (cut up)
1/3 cup shortening

4 pkg. yeast
1 tbsp. sugar
1/3 cup warm water
5 eggs (beaten)

1/2 cup sugar
9 cups flour
1/2 tsp. cardamon

Topping:
3 scoops flour
3 scoops sugar
1/2 cup butter (melted)
1/2 cup margarine (melted)

Directions:
Directions:
Heat butters and milk over medium high and watch closely until it just begins to bubble around edges -remove from heat. Add shortening which will melt while cooling.
In small bowl mix together the yeast, sugar and water. In a separate bowl, beat eggs with a fork.
In a large bowl, add cool milk mixture, eggs, and yeast mixture and 1/2 cup sugar. Mix well. Slowly mix in the 9 cups of flour and cardamon. Beat until smooth and bubbly on top. Cover bowl and place in warm place. Let rise until double -punch down. Repeat 2-3 times.
Grease hands and drop clumps in greased pans. Can use any size baking dishes - it will fill several.
Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with topping.

Topping: Mix flour, sugar and melted butters together.
Bake at 375º for 15 minutes then 350º for 10 more minutes.

This takes pretty much all day to make from start to finish because of the rising time.
Grandma Barbara used to make this every Christmas - an old German tradition.
