½ lbs ground beef
½ lbs bulk Italian sausage
1 large onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 ½ c. water
1 c. salsa
2 tsp sugar
1 to 2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp fennel seed
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
9 lasagna noodles
1 carton (16 oz) cottage cheese
4 c. shredded mozzarella cheese
¾ c. grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:
In large kettle cook beef, sausage & onion until meat is browned & onion is tender; drain. Stir in next 10 ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Cook noodles according to package; drain & rinse in cold water. In a greased 13 x 9 dish, layer 1/3 of noodles and meat sauce, half of the cottage cheese, 1/3 of the mozzarella and 1/3 of the Parmesan. Repeat layers. Cover & bake at 350° for 45 minutes, uncover & bake for 20 minutes. Let stand 20 minutes before cutting.
