3 cups dates cut up
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup water
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups uncooked rolled oats

Directions:
Directions:
Heat first 3 ingredients in sauce pan over low heat till thick, stirring frequently. Set aside and let cool.
Combine: shortening, and brown sugar. Then add flour, baking soda and salt, mixing thoroughly. Then add rolled oats.
Press 1/2 of dry mixture into bottom of 9x13 " greased pan. Spread filling over and then cover with remaining dry mixture, patting down gently.
Bake 25-30 minutes at 400º. cut while warm
