1/3 c. shortening
1 egg
1/2 c. water
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. cloves (ground)
1 tsp. salt

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, molasses and water thoroughly. Blend in remaining ingredients. Cover and chill for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Drop dough by teaspoon 2" apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake approximately 8 minutes or until almost no imprint is left in cookie when probed with finger.

Remove from pan immediately and cool.

Frost with vanilla frosting:

3 T. soft butter
1 1/2 c. confectioners sugar
3/4 tsp. vanilla
1 T. milk

Blend butter and sugar. Add vanilla and milk. Beat until frosting is smooth and of 'spreading' consistency.
