3/4 c. shortening
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 c. molasses
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground cloves

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together shortening and sugar. Add the egg and molasses and mix well. Fold in dry ingredients and stir. Cover and chill for 1 to 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350º. Form dough into small balls and roll in sugar. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes. Let set on cookie sheet for about a minute. Remove to rack and let cool.
