2 heaping Tablespoons Crisco
1 Tablespoon salt
2 Tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup warm water with yeast cake or package of yeast; dissolve yeast in warm water
5 cups sifted flour

Directions:
Directions:
Bring milk to a boil and pour over Crisco, salt, & sugar; stir until crisco is melted. Let get lukewarm.

Mix Crisco mixture, yeast and flour really well and let rise in a covered bowl for an hour to an hour and a half (place in slightly warm place). Stir the dough down and make into rolls. Let rolls rise another 2 hours
Bake at 450º until golden brown.

For cinnamon rolls, roll out dough and sprinkle with a mixture of cinnamon/sugar (1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon). Roll dough, then cut individual rolls, rise & bake.

if you get frustrated, you can buy Sister Schuberts yeast rolls at the grocery store. They are the next best likeness to Bessie's.

Who's Bessie? She worked for Lillian McWilliams, then Jane for much of her life doing cooking, cleaning, babysitting. She was the best--the ultimate in "old-school". Bessie was always ready with a big, strong hug for you.
