4 T Butter
4 c Flour
1 T Sugar
1 tsp bkg pwd
3 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
1 1/4 c Currents
1 Egg
1 3/4 c Buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Work butter into flour, add sugar, bkg pwd, bkg soda & salt. Mix with fingers.Add beaten egg and buttermilk. With a wooden spoon, mix thoroughly.
Work dough on floured board for 3 minutes. Divide in two, shape into ball, set on greased bkg sheet, flatten slightly. With a very sharp knife, dusted with flour, make 1/4 inch deep criss cross slashes in top of each loaf.
Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes or until golden and crusty.

I began making this in the 1970s in an effort to remind the kids of their Irish Heritage. I usually baked these loaves at St. Patrick's Day and served with Corned Beef & Cabbage.
