1 c. powdered sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. soda
pinch of salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 c. sifted flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar, butter and shortening until smooth. Add egg, vanilla and mix well. Sift together dry ingredients and stir into creamed mixture. Chill until stiff enough to handle. Roll into balls about the size of walnuts and place on greased cookie sheet. Flatten balls with a fork and dip balls into colored sugar if desired. Bake at 400º for 8-10 minutes. Makes 5 dozen.
