Preheat oven to 375°.

MIX TOGETHER (with wooden spoon in a larger saucepan):
1 and 1/2 c. sugar
1 and 1/2 c. water
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
5 drops red food color (optional)

PLACE ON MEDIUM-HIGH HEAT. BRING TO A BOIL. TAKE OFF THE HEAT.

ADD:
3 tbsp. butter

SET ASIDE.

Dough

SIFT TOGETHER:
2 c. flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tsp. salt

CUT IN:
2/3 c. shortening

ADD & MIX WITH A FORK:
1/2 c. milk

KNEAD 5 TO 10 TIMES.

ROLL DOUGH (12in. x 18in.) ON A FLOURED AREA. WATCH FOR STICKING.

CUT INTO 6 SQUARES WITH A TABLE KNIFE (no sharp knives). PLACE A PEELED AND CORED WHOLE APPLE ON THE SQUARE.

SPRINKLE A LITTLE SUGAR AND CINNAMON ON THE APPLE. DOT WITH BUTTER. BRING THE CORNERS TO THE MIDDLE AND PINCH THE EDGES TOGETHER TO FORM A *POCKET*.

PLACE THE DUMPLINGS ONTO A 9in. x 13in. UN-GREASED PAN (or 2 sq. / round pans). POUR THE SYRUP OVER THE DUMPLINGS. SPRINKLE WITH SUGAR (again!).

BAKE 35 MIN.
