8 lg. apples
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 Tbsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. clove
1 stick butter
lemon juice
2 c. flour, sifted
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening (lard)
6 Tbsp. cold water, add more if needed

Directions:
Directions:
Combine sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves together. Put in on top of apples: add 1 pat of butter. Bring corners of crust together and seal after adding 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice to each dumpling.
Crust:
Mix together flour, salt, shortening, cold water and roll out on baking sheet. Cut in 10- inch squares. Put about 1/2 cup of cut apples in each one. Bake at 350º for 45 minutes. Spoon drippings over dumplings. Put in baking pan serving. Sprinkle with mixed cinnamon and sugar over the top.
