When mama was growing up her family moved around a lot. Granddaddy Crawford was a Nazarene Preacher, he sang and was a Sunday School Teacher.

Granddaddy & Kathryn lived in the Echota Mill Village when I was growing up. He worked at Echota Cotton Mill and I thought it was neat he could walk to work. I remember he would sit in his recliner and smoke his pipe and he always carried a pocket watch. They had a sectional couch that would hold a lot of people. This was really something special, I guess the only one I had ever seen. They also had a station wagon car and the back seat faced the cars behind us, we loved to ride in the back seat and sing.

Every Halloween we would go to Granddaddy's and mama and daddy would stay at his house while me, Susan and Lanez would go trick or treating to every house in the Mill Village. Back then you didn't have to worry about going to people's houses you didn't know, it was just safe.

I'm not a camper but one time Susan and me went to Lake Allatoona for a week with Granddaddy and Kathryn and we had so much fun. I guess that was the only time I went truly camping, staying more than 1 night, cooking all meals on the grill or fire, and outdoor baths and bathrooms. Granddaddy really seemed to enjoy this trip.

About once a year the whole family would go to Fort Mountain to grill out breakfast and play games. This was a very special time. Most of his family lived out of town so we were always excited to see everyone.

Thanksgiving and Christmas were always special with the whole family. Cookouts at Granddaddy's were so much fun, he would grill steaks and they were really good. We also went to the beach with them. Kathryn was so sweet and laughing, she was always so much fun.

Sheryl would babysit me and Susan some and we always wanted her to cook us homemade french fries, they were the best! When mama and daddy had to work on Saturdays Granddaddy would keep us. We would always go to the bank and Fords Supermarket, Lanez, Susan and me. I'm sure most Granddaddy's wouldn't go to the grocery store with 3 kids, but we knew to mind him. In the fall when leaves were falling, we would help rake up leaves just so we could run and jump in them, then rake them up again.

I remember Granddaddy bought a restaurant at the Cherokee Motel on Hwy 225 that was close to our house. I got to clean tables and load and unload the dishwasher and made spending money. They also moved to Cassville and managed a motel and actually lived in the office. It was a round glass house in front of the motel and had a pool. For Christmas one year his children bought him a huge train set and he had it fixed upstairs with all of the trimmings.

Grandaddy was a Sunday School Teacher at Salem Baptist Church for the Senior Citizen Class and they truly loved him. Granddaddy and Kathryn later moved to Adairsville and Granddaddy died of Parkinson disease at the age 77. Kathryn died at the age of 94 with Alzheimer's. Grandaddy & Kathryn are both buried at Snow Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Adairsville, GA.

My cousin Dan Earnest said this about Granddaddy: "There are so many great things that I could say about Harvey Crawford. I know that he loved Jesus cause he shared Him with me many times. I have heard people that worked with him say that he was Tough and Firm. I believe that to be a real man you have to stand up for what you believe."
