2 cups sugar
2 2/3 cups shortening or 2 cups shortening and
2/3 cup margarine creamed together
1 tsp. salt
2 eggs
3/4 cup buttermilk or 3/4 cup milk and 1/2 tsp vinegar
2 tsp. pure vanilla extract (crucial)
4 3/4 cups flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together sugar and shortening. Add salt, eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and beat well, about one minute. Add flour and baking soda. Mix for four minutes. Pour into 9 x 13 pan and bake at 375º for 10 minutes or until light brown on bottom.
