Cake:
1 yellow cake mix (18 1/4 oz)
1 small pkg (3.4 oz) instant vanilla pudding mix
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. water
4 eggs
Filling:
5 T. flour
1 c. milk
1/2 c. butter, softened
1/2 c. Crisco
1 c. sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:
In a mixing bowl, beat cake mix, pudding mix and shortening on low speed until crumbly. Add water and eggs; beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour into a greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Invert onto a wire rack to cool completely. Meanwhile in a saucepan, combine flour and milk, stir until smooth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Cool completely. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter, shortening, sugar, vanilla and salt; beat in the cold milk mixture until sugar is dissolved. About 5 minutes. Split cake into 2 horizontal layers. Spread filling over the bottom layer; replace top layer. Cut into serving size pieces. Garnish with whipped topping or fresh raspberries.

To make Susie Q cake, just substitute a chocolate cake mix and chocolate pudding mix.
