Fill 5 gallon jar within 2 inches of top with small and medium pickling cucumbers. Fill jar with cold brine made of 2 lbs salt, 2-3-4 gallons water. Heat water and salt and cool before pouring over the cukes. Rinse pickles in cold water and put back in jar. Cover with 1 1/2 gallon vinegar and 3/4 oz alum. Let stand 10 days. Remove from sour mixture and cover with sweet vinegar made from 15 lbs sugar, 1 tsp oil of cloves, 1/4 tsp oil of cinnamon, 1 oz benzoate of soda dissolved in water to make 4 oz. Add to vinegar mixture.

Pierce cucumbers with fork and pack in jars, covering pickles with sweet vinegar and sealing.
