1, 16-oz can fruit cocktail--use juice only
1, 12-0z can evaporated milk
1 c water
3 eggs, beaten
1/2 c melted butter
2 T vanilla
2 c sugar
15 slices stale bread, cubed
1 c raisins or diced apple
1 c pecan pieces (optional)

Sauce ingredients:
1 & 1/4 c water
2 c brown sugar
2 oz whiskey or dark rum
1 t nutmeg

Pudding:
Combine liquids and sugar in a large bowl, stir well.
Add bread, raisins and pecans.
Mix, using hands, until well blended.
Turn mixture into a greased 9X13 pan, bake @ 300º for appox. 1 hour.
If you prefer to use fresh bread, toast in a warm oven for 15-20 minutes to get the same effect.

Sauce:
In a saucepan, bring water to a boil, add brown sugar, and boil while stirring until 1/2 of liquid is gone.
Add whiskey or rum.
Cook at a boil for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
Sprinkle in nutmeg, remove from heat, and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
Drizzle over pudding.
