2 cups shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 tsp almond extract
4 cup sifted flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
36 almonds

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar; add egg and extract. Sift dry ingredients into egg mixture and blend. Mix dough until very smooth. Form into 3 dozen small balls. Press an almond into the top of each cookie, gently.

Beat 1 egg yolk with 1 tbsp water and brush over each cookie with pastry brush.

Bake at 275º for 15 minutes then bake at 250º for 5 to 8 more minutes.
