1 c. shortenibg
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c. warm water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
4 c. sifted flour
FILLING:
1 c. chopped dates
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. water
2 T. flour
1 T. lemon juice
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar & shortening. Add eggs and beat. Dissolve baking soda in warm water and add to first mixture. Add vanilla. Sift flour and salt. Drop by teaspoons onto greased cookie sheet, reserving a small amount of dough. Make indentations in center of each with spoon. Put teaspoon of filling in hole and top with a drop of dough from the reserve. Bake at 400º for 10 minutes.
FILLING:
Combine all filling ingredients cook until the mixture boils. Cool & fill cookies.
