1/2 C SHORTENING-MELTED
1 C BROWN SUGAR
1 1/2 C FLOUR
1/2 TSP. SALT
1 TSP. SODA {DESOLVE IN 1 TBSP. MILK}
2 EGGS
1 CUP DATES {CUT UP}
1/2 CUP WALNUTS {CHOPPED}

STEAM 2 HOURS

Mix all ingredients in large mixing bowl.

Grease inside of 1 LB cans. Pour half of dough in each can. Fill large kettle (large enough to cover with lid with cans inside) 1/3 full of water. Place two jar rings at bottom of kettle, set cans in kettle on jar rings and bring water to boil. Cover and steam for approx 2 hrs. Test for doneness. Knife will come out clean when done. Remove from cans, let cool. Slice 1" thick and serve with freshly whipped cream. Great for the holiday!

Great Holiday dessert. This recipe has been in my family for years and is a tradition at Christmas. Very rich and yummy.
