Cream together:
½ cup shortening
2 cups sugar
Add 2 eggs and beat
Combine 2 cups flour
½ tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
½ tsp cinnamon or a bit more
½ tsp nutmeg
3 cups peeled, cored, and grated pippin or granny smith apples (abt 4-5)

Icing:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup milk

Bake 350 degrees 30-40 minutes. While the cake is in the oven, combine icing ingredients in a saucepan. Bring icing to boil just before cake is done and pour over hot cake. Serve with cool whip and ice cream. This is a family favorite cake for us. Heber wants it for every birthday. It is very moist and delicious.
