1/2 cup shortening
1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2-1 oz. squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup milk
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
1 cup powdered sugar

Directions:

Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Beat in eggs, then chocolate. Mix together flour, baking powder and salt, blend in alternating with milk. Add nuts. Chill 3 hours. Form into 1" balls, roll in powdered sugar. Place on cookie sheet, 2-3 inches apart. Bake in 350º oven about 15 minutes. Cool slightly, remove from cookie sheet.

You may substitute cocoa for chocolate. 3 tablespoons cocoa plus 1 tablespoon oil = 1 chocolate square.
