Directions:
Directions:
Scald milk (keep it below boiling point). Melt shortening cool. Place salt and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add hot milk and stir to dissolve sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Crumble yeast into small bowl. Add 1/2 C lukewarm water. Let yeast soften 5 minutes. Sift flour once before measuring. Add the softened yeast and the remaining lukewarm water to milk mixture. Mix well. Add half the flour. and beat one minute. Add the unbeaten egg and blend thoroughly. Add shortening beat 1 minute. Gradually add remaining sifted flour and mix well. Sprinkle bread board lightly with flour. Turn dough onto board and let stand 10 minutes.(this makes dough easier to knead). Next, knead dough for 10 minutes until smooth. Place in bowl large enough for dough to double in bulk. Round the dough into a smooth ball and place in bowl. Cover with a clean damp towel and place in a warm spot away from draft. At room temperature of 82º dough should be light in 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Test by pressing finger deeply into dough. If the impression remains the dough is ready. Knead down. Turn onto board, Cover with dry towel and let stand for 10 minutes. The dough is now ready to be shaped into desired shape. Makes about 2 doz. rolls. Bake at 350º for 20-30 minutes.

Personal Notes:
This recipe is from girlfriend/co-worker, Kathy Snyder's mother, Joan Clapp; they are very good. Kathy and I spent a day with Joan leaning to make these rolls. They turned out pretty well for us being inexperienced.
