2/3 c. Crisco or any shortening
1. c. sugar
3 eggs, separated
1 T. lemon rind or juice
2 c. flour
1 t. soda
1 t. allspice
1 t. cinnamon
1 t. nutmeg
1/2 t. cloves
1/2 t. salt
1/2 to 1 c. buttermilk
1 1/2 c. strawberry jam
2 c. nuts
Beat the egg whites and put them in last.

Icing

2 c. sugar
1/4 t. soda
1 c. canned milk
1/2 stick butter
1 t. vanilla extract

Bake in stem pan on 325º for 45 minutes to an hour.
