1 pkg. (4 oz) Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate
½ cup water
2 cups cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. salt
1 cup butter flavored Crisco or butter
2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
4 egg whites

Microwave chocolate and water until melted. Stirring often; set aside. Mix flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. Beat shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time beating well after each addition. Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating until smooth.
Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold into batter.
Pour into 3 greased and floured 9 “round cake pans. Cool 15 minutes and remove from pans.
