½ cup rice
1 quart milk
Dash salt
½ cup sugar

Serve with butter, cinnamon, and white or brown sugar.

Put first four ingredients into top of a double boiler:

Cook, covered, over gently boiling water (being sure to add water if the pan starts to go dry), stirring occasionally, at least one hour, or until rice is tender and mixture is very thick.

Serve with butter, cinnamon, and sugar.

This, with some leftover meat and maybe some canned fruit, was often Saturday night supper when we were growing up. It’s not a dessert, but we are putting it with the other rice pudding recipes. I think the Swedes call this ris gryns gryt or something like that. It is a very old-fashioned dish.
