1 1/2 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1/2 c. chocolate chips

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 325º. Grease 9x13 pan. In medium bowl, combine dates, soda, and water; cool. In large mixer bowl, combine 1 1/4 c. sugar, shortening and eggs; mix well. Add date mixture, flour and salt; mix well. Pour into prepared pan. In small bowl, combine 1/2 c. sugar, nuts, and chocolate chips; sprinkle over batter in pan. Bake 40-45 minutes.
